Fish, naiads and riverside snails leading in the LIFE Potamo Fauna exhibition in the Fair of Santa Martirià in Banyoles

• Once again the Consorci de l’Estany raises awareness actions to explain the environmental importance of the fauna living on the Banyoles lake and the rivers Ter, Fluvià and Muga. • 30,000 people haved visited the Fair, taking advantage of the good weather of the last weekend; during last Friday more than 900 students also visited it. • Sensitive species of the project LIFE Potamo Fauna as naiads, fishes and water snails have been exposed, the latter being also the subject of "Vertigo Year" by the Spanish Society of Malacology.

The Consorci de l’Estany, with co-operation of Limnos was present on 18th, 19th and 20eth November 2016 at the Fira de Santa Martirià in Banyoles to report LIFE Potamo Fauna and natural space of the Banyoles lake. This edition is specifically focused to let people know about species like riparian snails (its scientific name is Vertigo moulinsiana and Vertigo angustior). Some of them are less than 2 mm long and live in wetlands around the lake. Banyoles has the best populations of the Iberian Peninsula.

A 10 x 5 meter stand was settled in the place where local farm animals were showed. In the Fair at La Draga. The space available assembled three 100 liter tanks, with a suitable wood panel display with presence of native fish (barbel, catfish, eels and freshwater blenny) and naiads (elongated and round naiad and also Anodonta). These species have been the subject of works of conservation and captive breeding in order to recover their populations both Banyoles lake and also the Ter and Fluvià rivers.

Thus, four information panels of the exhibition project LIFE Potamo Fauna, referring to the fish, snails and naiads riverbank were showed at the Fair.

In 2016 the Spanish Society of Malacology designed the Mollusc Year for terrestrial snails of the genus Vertigo. In Banyoles Lake, both Vertigo angustior and V. moulinsiana, have the best populations of the Iberian Peninsula and which are the subject of studies and conservation actions to expand distribution. During the fair over 700 drawings related to the fauna of the lake and the Potamo Fauna project information were distributed, as well as the work of environmental volunteers of the association Limnos, an organization that also participated in the Fair.
