C.8 – Protection against Crayfish plague on native Crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes) populations

In order to avoid drastic effects on native populations Austropotamobius pallipes due to Crayfish plague on in the area covered by the project, we have established a series of measures for early detection and mitigation, if possible, of its expansion. When an outbreak appears, a network of checkpoints to assess how it acts on the population of crayfish will be established. We also determine the affected area, and the possible existence of natural barriers (waterfalls), evaluating its effectiveness to contain the spread of the disease.

When necessary, such as emergency electrical barriers will be used to prevent the progression of the course up by the Crayfish plague, so the sectors of the population of Austropotamobius pallipes will be protected and not infected.

EXPECTED RESULTS

The main expected result is to prevent the complete disappearance of any other population within the area covered by the project, including new centers to be established or consolidated.

Moreover, the information obtained about the evolution of the populations affected by Crayfish plague is in itself results that can contribute to the conservation of this species both in the area covered by the project as a whole natural distribution.
