Captures of invasive alien turtles have been reduced thanks to the LIFE Potamo Fauna project in 2017
- In 2017, fewer captures were obtained with a slightly lower effort than in 2016 in the Ter River, but there has been more in the Banyoles lake, especially young specimens. - A large number of European Pond Turtles (65) released in the same project in previous years have been caught, and also 4 Spanish Pond Turtles, many less than other years.
In the year 2017, 63 invasive turtles have been captured, 38 of them in Estany de Banyoles and 24 in the Ter river. 80% of the captures from the Ter River have been made between Celrà and Sobrànigues, although they have also been also captured in Bescanó and Salt where 183 individuals had been caught in the previous year, what indicates a decrease in captures in these areas. Throughout the project, 334 invasive specimens have been captured in Ter River, mainly in Fontajau and Sobrànigues.
In Estany de Banyoles area, captures have increased especially in the area of the Can Morgat lakes where 16 specimens, many of them young individuals, born in recent years, have been captured; they had not been previously captured because they were not big enough. In the main pond only 14 specimens have been captured, which shows that the population here is under control. Throughout the project 106 exotic turtles have been taken in the lake, of which 72 in the lake and the rest in humid surrounding areas.
In the Ter River, two different species or taxa have been caught, the two turtle varieties of Florida, the red ears and the yellow turtle. As regards the Estany de Banyoles, 2 individuals of the False Map Turtle (Graptemys pseudogeographica) have been caught. Throughout the project the captured taxa has been up to 8, although many of them with just testimonial captures. The captures were made through 20 heat traps and also through manual or hand-held captures. The locations where traps were placed in 2017 are in sections near the areas where the turtles have been released within the same project during the same year. In this way, we try to eliminate the competition caused by alien species on native turtles, one of its main threats.
The data consolidates the results indicating that in the Estany de Banyoles the population is very controlled, but that needs regular control to prevent the population from recovering again. Regarding the Ter river, although the captures may indicate that the population has been reduced, the fact that it is an open system where specimens can move a lot and where changes in water level, drought and level management of the Ter River can happen, can cause changes in the distribution of turtles; so, it would be necessary to continue with this control in order to keep the population at low levels. However, in the areas where native turtles have been released, the population of invasive ones is very controlled.
