C.10 – Reinforcements population of Vertigo angustior and Vertigo moulinsiana in Banyoles
It aims to expand the distribution are of both Vertigo angustior and Vertigo moulinsiana around BanyolesLake. Translocations of individuals that currently occupy some sectors will be held to suitable habitats in restored areas in the context of previous projects (LIFE03NATE000067 and LIFE08NATE000078, among others).
Preliminary studies carried out by the “Universidad del País Vasco” have proved the existence of high densities of both species in suitable habitats, especially south of the lake and the Vilar and Cendra ponds.
It’s expected to move a minimum of 5 individuals and 20 if possible to the destination per season, making a total of between 150 and 600 individuals per season. At all times we will follow the criterion of minimal impairment that is based on the removal of less than 20% of the individuals found. The translocation of individuals will be made as soon as possible, transporting them to collect vegetation of their own habitat and source population. During 2014 preliminary translocation proves will be tried. Later, there will be two translocations year periods, spring and autumn, following the specifications drawn up in the working protocol. That will be repeated annually until the end of the project.
EXPECTED RESULTS
We want to achieve the establishment of a minimum of 5 new populations of Vertigo moulisiana and 3 new one for Vertigo angustior in restored areas around Banyoles Lake. In the case of this Vertigo moulinsiana entail an extension of their area of distribution in Banyoles Lake a minimum percentage of 10%. However, for Vertigo angustior expanding their area of distribution will be higher with a minimum percentage of 25%. In addition, the conservation of these species in the area will be enhanced by decreasing the fragmentation of their populations.
