The captures of invasive turtles thanks to the LIFE project Potamo Fauna have increased

22/12/2016

During 2016 the project focused in the area of Celrà and Sobrànigues, which have made the most number of captures and where actions to recover the native European Pond Turtle have been done

During last year, up to 183 invasive turtles have been captured, of which 24 in Banyoles lake and 158 the river Ter. Up to 85% of the river Ter of the catches have been made between Celrà and Sobrànigues, but some individuals have also been caught in Bescanó, Fontajau, Sarrià de Ter and Medinyà. This number represents a significant increase in captures as during the previous two years of the project LIFE Potamo Fauna when 198 individuals were caught in the river Ter. However it should be noted that 38% of the turtles were taken in the same trap in Sobrànigues, which has captured a total of 59 invasive turtles, with a maximum of 24 a day in the same trap. The Lake of Banyoles catches remain just as low as in previous years, indicating that there is no increase in the population and that is quite controlled.

Ter river have taken four species or different taxa, the two varieties of Florida turtle, and both the red-eared and the yellow belly represent the majority of individuals. Regarding Lake Banyoles six species have been taken, including a biter turtle. The species caught are Trachemys elegans, Trachemys Scripta, Trachemys decussata, Pseudemys concinna and Graptemys pseudogeographica.

The captures have been made through 25 insulation traps and also through manual catches or handles. The locations where the traps are set during 2016 are sections near areas where European Pond Turtles were released in the same projects this year, an attempt to eliminate competition caused by invasive species on native, one of the main threats.

The data consolidates the fact that Banyoles lake population is very controlled and the river Ter is still at an early stage of control, and there should be more effort in the future.

The traps also allow capture native species, which allows to track the status of the enforcement of the populations carried out with Mediterranean Turtles both in Ter river and Banyoles Lake, and how is the turtle population. During 2016, up to 48 Mediterranean Turtles were captured (5 in Banyoles lake and the others in Ter river), and 122 European Pond Turtles (65 in Banyoles and 57 in Ter river), just in the areas of resettlement in Bescanó and Sobrànigues. This high number of captures, similar to invasive species, indicates the good acclimation of the European Pond Turtle individuals released in several sites and the good condition of the Mediterranean Turtle population of the River Ter.
